Continuity

One of the things that helps maintain engagement and energy in a kickoff meeting is continuity. Consider modifying exercises so that they build upon each other. Facilitate discussion around data that you are gathering and analyzing in real time, rather than delivering the results from a kickoff exercise the next day in an e-mail attachment. Design activities that echo back to a particular theme, even a theme that is defined during the meeting itself.

Real time analysis and discussion is a great tool, especially when we can share it instantly. Problems that arise with this are: not enough time in the schedule or budget, clients that resist new technologies, and the need to document what we agree upon. No matter how complete an understanding we get in a meeting, we still need to follow up with a summary of key points so that we verify we got the fine points right.
